Luling VFD, Paradis VFD, Bayou Gauche VFD, and Hahnville VFD participated in joint training on Monday, April 20th. The topic was Electric / Hybrid vehicles and lithium batteries and was led by FETA instructor Joey Cacioppo.

Topics included high voltage vehicle firefighting and rescue; Identifying, immobilizing, stabilizing and disabling vehicles; understanding vehicle construction. Utilizing “tools” available to assist such as government sites, downloadable apps, notations on or near license plates, and discussion on what you can learn about a vehicle from the VIN.

With the increase in use of lithium and ion batteries in all areas – homes, vehicles, businesses – instructor Cacioppo provided a presentation on these items. This included hands on view of various batteries, discussion on hazards of these batteries, demonstrations and videos showing the damage that can be caused via fires and/or explosions.

Following the class a live demonstration was conducted outside showing the effect of a impact on these batteries.

We thank all for their attendance and especially thank our instructor for sharing his knowledge.
