PSA School will be out in a few short weeks and summer is just around the corner. As warmer weather approaches water safety is of utmost importance. Did you know that Louisiana has the second highest drowning rate in the US for children 0-14 years of age. Drowning remains the third leading cause of death for Louisiana children in this age group. There are many safety tips that can be followed to help prevent drowning like installing pool fences, direct supervision of a lifeguard or adult, using life jackets and other safety equipment, preparing children by having them attend swim lessons, and learning CPR in case an emergency arises. Louisiana has an abundant amount number of bayous, lakes, canals, and ditches. Drowning is not confined to a swimming pool and can occur in a tub of water, knows no age, and even a good swimmer can drown. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.
